Science

Overview

The Science Faculty at Horowhenua College has the objective of providing all students the opportunity to grow in confidence and to enable them to increase in knowledge and competency in Mathematics and Accounting. We employ six  highly qualified teaching staff that include specialists in Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Agricultural Science. We have designed a range of courses aimed at maximising the potential of all our students and equipping them for the career they choose.

Facilities

Horowhenua College has five Science laboratories spread across two teaching blocks dedicated to teaching general science and the specialist science subjects. The  Science Faculty also has use of a  trolley housing  20 computers that can be used in any of the science  rooms.

Year 13: Biology; Chemistry; Physics; Agriculture and Horticulture and  Vocational Sciences
Year 12: Biology; Chemistry; Physics, Agriculture and Horticulture Academy , Vocational Science
Year 11: Science, Vocational Science
Year 10: All of our Year 10 Science classes are organised into core classes so that pupils work in a challenging environment with students of a similar ability.
Year 9: All of our Year 9 Science classes are organised into core classes so that pupils work in a challenging environment with students of a similar ability.

The Horowhenua College Science Faculty have a number of extra-curricular activities on offer:

• ICAS Science competitition – formerly Australasian Science quiz

• Otago University Advanced Sciences Academy
• Auckland University Rotary Science and Technology Forum
• Otago University Hands on Science
• other opportunities are offered to students such as Brain Bee Challenge, Science Quiz, Biology Olympiad
