Year 9 and 10 students are required to participate in as wide a range of subjects as possible. There will be plenty of time to specialise in the senior school later on. All Year 9 and 10 students will study at least one subject from each of the 8 essential learning areas.
Students with special learning needs are supported by staff of the Learning Support Department. The average size of core classes and option classes is 26. Homework is an important part of College life and staff will insist on it being done. Research shows that regular homework improves learning outcomes.
The Qualifications Framework has “opened up” the senior school. Students are staying at school longer and it is important that courses meet the needs of the students. Our size is a real advantage. Our roll means we gain more staffing to offer a wider choice of subjects.
Our “option structure” for Year 11 to 13 students varies each year depending on student demands. The list below shows subjects available at each level. Because many subjects are offered more than once at a level, students have a better chance of getting the choice they want.

Horowhenua College has been a good experience for me. There are a lot of different subjects and you can choose the subjects you want. The subjects are fun and enjoyable. When you are an exchange or international student you get really close to the other international students. You hang out a lot with them in the breaks and afterschool. The school has a trip around the north island for all the new international students as well. It was really fun. I had drama, art, photography, English, Math and Outdoor education. In drama I was in a group where we made our own play. In Art we painted a mural on a board which also included collage and mixed medium on a theme we chose. My teacher was very helpful and patient. I learned a lot and the other students were very talented. In photography you learnt how to use Photoshop and how to make a folio board again on our own theme. Outdoor education was my must enjoyable subject. I had an awesome teacher that was always smiling and helpful. He was really into his work and wanted to be a really good teacher for the students and made a questionnaire at the end of the year. Horowhenua College has been a good experience for me and I have made a lot of new international friends. » View all testimonials
