General Philosophy of the Mathematics and Business Faculty
Our first aim is to promote enjoyment of Mathematics, secondly to promote successful outcomes and thirdly to promote the importance of this subject in all facets of life. Mathematics is a compulsory subject for students in Years 9, 10 and 11.
Maths is recognised as an essential subject for all students. The subject is of importance to most careers and further study. Horowhenua College offers a number of programmes which provide for the different academic ability of its students. All students learn to organise and interpret data, calculate and reason logically, be systematic and creative in solving problems, and to develop thinking skills in meeting mathematical challenges.
Through the study of mathematics students develop a range of skills, knowledge and concepts to assist in analysing and solving increasingly complex problems. The junior programme includes investigative exercises, skills practice, practical work and spatial design. Particularly able students may study at the next level and enter external examinations. During a normal week tutorials are offered to enable students to receive individual assistance.
The number of mathematics courses available at the College ensures that the individual learning needs and abilities of each student are addressed. The College also offers opportunities for participating in a range of National and International competitions. A number of students have achieved outstanding results in these competitions in the past.
Year 9
Developing numeracy skills is the main focus of the Year 9 programme. Horowhenua College is in its third year of involvement in the Secondary Numeracy Project.
Year 10
While maintaining the numeracy skills already learned, students in Year 10 build up their knowledge base ready for Year 11.
Year 11
Year 11 students choose one of two different courses in Mathematics.
Mathematics is an Achievement Standard based course with an examination focus. It prepares students for study at Levels 2 and 3.
Maths X is a basic Mathematics course so students are able to gain their numeracy requirement for their Level 1 NCEA.
Year 12
There are two different mathematics courses available to Year 12 students.
Mathematics is an academic course to prepare students for study at Level 3.
Mathematics with Applications is a Level 2 course with some Level 1 units of work. The focus is on internally assessed units. Successful students are able to study Level 3 Statistics and Modelling the following year.
Year 13
There are two Mathematics courses available for study at Level 3. They are Mathematics with Calculus and Statistics and Modelling. Students may study both courses if they wish.
Both courses prepare students for study at a university.
Please visit the Mathematics Years web pages for further information.
Full course outlines are available within the Students Handbook.
